Sometimes on the subway...

You will be sitting with a giant man to your left, then a tiny space on your right.

Sometimes, another giant man will claim that tiny space on your right and squish you so bad that you pop up to standing.

Kind of like a zit. Except I didn't land on a mirror.

  1. My boss (who is looking very young Robert Redford today) and I (who am in my white Nanuk of the North coat) were over at Dean & Deluca and two NBC PAs came over to ask us if we wanted to be on The Today Show and maybe win $100. I was like, "Sorry, we work for the peacock."
  2. My Nanuk-of-the-North getup seemed to act like a force field around me on the subway. No one jostled me at all.
  3. I have taken to wearing my enormous sunglasses on the subway. Instant privacy.
  4. There's pee leaking from the ceiling in my kitchen. What is it about me and NYC kitchens?
  5. I have not had anything stolen from me lately.
  6. My boss and I made a pact to not eat sweets for the next 10 days. This is huge, as we have been getting yumminess in the morning and again in the afternoon.
  7. Last night I was the token female at a department dinner of 16 database architects. I had three beers and lots of meat on sticks.

THURSDAY SLICE: It's a Race Thing

Every day, several times a day, hired cars slow down and honk as I walk to or from the subway along the main drag.

It's because I'm white.

I'm the only white person in sight.

They assume that either I a) have money for a car service, or b) would rather travel by car than by foot in a neighborhood in which I am the only white person.

The other day I saw a young black man try to hail one of these cars, but the car would not stop.

Perhaps it was on a destination call.

  1. I am not online at home.
  2. Because I am paying double-rent in January and February, I cannot swing double utilities. So I've only got the iPhone and blogging via iPhone is not where it's at.
  3. I may be quiet for a bit. I'm getting super organized and re-vamping my whole online strategy. I may segue into photo-blogging, to keep the words for other energies.
  4. Things continue GREAT and IRRITATING in equal measures, just as they should be.
  5. I'm trying out my 60-second standup routine on friends tonight. I go on Feb. 12.
  6. Vulnerability makes me hostile.
  7. I hate my hair.

THURSDAY SLICE: Happy New Year, People

December 31 was a bit on the suck side of things.

2009: So far, so good.

Things brightened up in the evening. I went to a small party at the home of a playwright friend and her husband and their four cats. We played Ex Libris. We all were writers, so the wit overflowed. Everyone was lovely, and very interested in how I was finding NY, seeing as I just moved here. I of course had anecdotes galore--the attempted mugging, the Pantsless Wonder.

Turns out everyone here reads The New Yorker, so whenever there was a conversational lull, someone would pipe up with a contribution from TNY and we'd all chime in with our opinion.

I kept the fact that I thought this was hilarious to myself.

At 11:38pm I got a text from a friend who, as it turns out, was exactly 10 blocks away, and they could see the ball in Times Square from the balcony. So I hightailed it over and got there literally in time to be introduced to everyone a split-second before the ball EXPLODED. It was pretty phenomenal, though seen from afar.

We then proceeded to play a decidedly less mature round of games, including Truth or Dare and Never Have I Ever. All the questions involved sex, and there was a crank call to an escort service to boot. Probably one of the best crank calls I've ever been witness to, as a matter of fact.

I'm not much of a drinker, but I had beer, champagne, and vodka as the night progressed.

Rounded out the night with a trip to a private party at the Upright Citizens Brigade, and then breakfast at a diner.

My cabbie would not take me all the way home, which I'm pretty sure is illegal. I guess he's afraid he'll get mugged. Pansy.

I slept in today until 4:21pm. Yum.
